The London 2012 Paralympics

Most of the London 2012 Olympic sports also feature in the Paralympics which run from 29th August to 9th September 2012. So if you want a cheaper and quieter London break at this time of year, you could take in some Paralympic competitions and combine them with more traditional sightseeing.

Sports include wheelchair tennis, rugby and basketball, sitting volleyball and paralympic athletics, cycling and swimming and take place in many of the same venues as the Olympics (see The Games - Don't Miss These section).

Plus the Paralympic Torch Relay will take place in August in the build up to the start of the Paralympic Games. In Beijing in 2008, the athlete Hou Bin pulled himself up to light the cauldron in the capital's Bird's Nest Stadium - who knows what the Olympic Committee have in store to beat that Paralympic Games highlight...

On 8th September, you might come across International Paralympic Day, the fifth ever to be held, in Trafalgar Square. This event will showcase the 20 Paralympic sports and even let us have a go ourselves, under the expert eyes of Paralympic athletes. Game of wheelchair basketball anyone?
